With its 420km of coast, the Charente is one of the most visited areas of France. The countryside is ablaze in early summer with sunflowers and poppies, and along the Gironde the coastal villages such as Talmont and Meschers have ideal beaches for family outings; the charming ports of Mortagne and Port Maubert are also a delightful way to spend a day with lunch in one of the pretty waterside restaurants or cafes. Hop onto the other side of the Gironde and you are in the Medoc wine region with several famous producers such as Pauillac and St Estephe.
