Dordogne Holiday Cottage

Dordogne Holiday Cottage
CLICK HERE FOR MORE HOLIDAY COTTAGES IN THE DORDOGNE
Renting a Dordogne Holiday Cottage has become a very popular holiday choice for the British over the last 20 years, and there are many reasons for this. Certainly it means staying in a region of widely varying and dramatic scenery with pleasant weather: not too hot, but just about right so that you can enjoy plenty of outdoor activities.

Following the famous river west, the Holiday Cottages in Dordogne that French Affair rents, are scattered just east of Beaulieu to the Gironde estuary. East of St Céré, the hills are steep and high, quickly rising to over 550 m above sea level. Going west, the landscape assumes a more rugged character as it spreads out over the limestone plateaux. This is the setting for the astonishing Gouffre de Padirac with its mysterious river over 90 metres underground and Rocamadour, which is built vertically up the side of the cliff. Just there, one of our Dordogne Holiday Cottages is actually a neighbour of the Chateau de Castelnau Bretenoux: the second largest castle in the south west of France, where a well established classical music festival takes place every summer with concerts and operas performed within the battlements.

Travelling west from Souillac, the countryside becomes softer. The gentler rhythm of the landscape is punctuated by more wonderfully romantic castles like Montfort, Beynac and Castelnaud la Chapelle. The common thread is the river, whose clear waters flow though a valley of walnut groves, Indian corn and limestone cliffs.

Down there is probably the most popular town in the region for a holiday in a Dordogne Holiday Cottage – the town of Sarlat. This wonderful and atmospheric centre provides a good selection of shops and restaurants, colourful markets, and also shows a lovely collection of medieval and renaissance buildings including La Maison de Boetie, Lanterne des morts, and Hotel Plamon.

The well known town of Bergerac is a thriving provincial centre overlooking the river. It is also one of the 18 bastide towns built during the 13th Century by the Kings of England and France who encouraged their developments to extend their influence in this disputed part of France. Other good examples are Eymet, Puyguilhem, Castillonnes, as well as Villefranche du Périgord where you can rent your dream Dordogne Holiday Cottage with French Affair. West of Bergerac, the river is deeper and wider, flowering past Montbazillac on its south bank, while on the north side lie some of the great names of wine making such as St Emilion and Pomerol.
