While thinking of a Holiday villa in Charente Maritime, most of us will think of La Rochelle. It is just over one hour’s flight from London, and within a very short time you could sunning yourself with a glass of wine on one of its lovely terraces facing the old port! La Rochelle and its smart shops, La Rochelle and its history. It is true that this centre is a real treat for holidaymakers. But you should also discover some of its beautiful surrounding areas. There are plenty of unspoilt, lesser known spots to stay when looking to rent a villa in Charente Martime.
Not far from the coast, you will find the wetland that is called La Venise Verte : it is all green, natural and quite impressive. On the northern coast of the department well known for fishing are some lovely seaside resorts: Chatillon Plage, Fouras, Ronce les Bains, La Palmyre, St George de Didonne or St Palais sur Mer. All are friendly, jolly seaside towns with good beaches and a pleasant family atmosphere. With 420 km of coast and the second best sunshine rate after Provence, the Charente Maritime is one of the most visited areas of France; so many locals have decided to rent their house through French Affair who have selected the best Charente Maritime villas.
Between Rochefort and the wild coast with its Forest, you will find the Seudre Valley. This oyster farming area is an excellent spot for fishing. Nearby villages like Mornac have their small oyster farming port and some local sailing competitions are organised on the river Seudre. Mornac and La Petite Eiguille are both cherished by painters who like to observe the colours of the water changing along the day. On the subject of oysters, we must mention Marennes on the northern part of the Seudre estuary. It is mandatory to visit this place when you are staying in your Charente Maritime Villa; you cannot leave without having tasted the best oysters in the whole of France.
The Charente Martitme department stretches itself along the main part of the Gironde estuary as well, and we have found for you in our selection of Charente Maritime Villas at least two properties that you can rent from where you could admire enchanting sunsets above the water. Then between vineyards, sunflowers and maize, the landscape undulates revealing the best of countryside around St Genis. You will pass by the coastal villages of Talmont and Meschers and other little ports such as Port Maubert or Mortagne sur Gironde before you reach the Gironde border.
